Hyphenating suffixes

Suffixes are not usually hyphenated. Some exceptions are:

  • -style
  • -elect
  • -free
  • -based

As in these examples:

  • modernist-style paintings
  • president-elect Smith
  • sugar-free drinks
  • oil-based paint
